In early February, Georgia Southern football fans were devastated to learn of the passing of former player—and current Indianapolis Colts linebacker—Edwin Jackson. Jackson died in an accident caused by an allegedly drunk driver after an unexpected series of events.
According to reports, Jackson was a passenger in a ride-sharing vehicle on Interstate 70 outside Indianapolis when police believe Jackson felt ill. The driver pulled over and both men got out of the car. Suddenly, a pickup truck crashed into both men and the stopped car. The driver of the pickup truck tried to flee but was caught by police and arrested. Neither Jackson nor the rideshare driver survived.
When you think about pedestrian accidents, you may imagine someone crossing the street at a crosswalk or otherwise walking in the path of traffic. However, pedestrian accidents can happen even when you think you are out of the way of danger. Just because you believe you are out of the path of traffic does not mean you are out of harm’s way. Distracted drivers, drunk drivers, and other reckless drivers may depart from the road and strike you even if you are on the shoulder. In addition, some drivers who are slowing down to look at the accident may incite a chain-reaction crash that affects those standing on the shoulder. These situations happen more often than you may believe.
