Foot injuries are common in the working adult. The foot is made up of a series of bones, muscles and tendons that can be easily damaged. The most common foot injury is a mid-foot fracture. This occurs when heavy objects strike the top of the foot, causing the underlying bones to fracture.

When the foot is fractured, you may experience swelling or bruising in the affected area. If the fracture is severe, you may not be able to put weight on the foot. It is critical to seek medical treatment as soon as you sustain a foot injury to prevent damage to the surrounding tissue and ligaments.

Foot injuries can occur in any workplace, but are more common in warehouses, restaurants and retail stores. In restaurants, workers are often injured when heavy objects fall on their feet. Workers can be injured when boxes stacked high off the floor become dislodged and hit their feet. These injuries can render you immobile, cause pain, and loss of time from work.

Ankle Injuries

Twisted ankles are common mild injuries that can occur in almost any workplace. More severe ankle injuries include stress fractures and breaks. Many people suffer broken ankles when falling from ladders, slipping on stairs and stepping unto uneven surfaces.

Although foot and ankle injuries are more common on construction sites, in warehouses and in food service settings, these injuries can occur anywhere. Wet floors can cause slips and falls that result in foot and ankle injuries. Common symptoms of foot injuries include:

  • Intense pain in the affected area
  • Swelling and bruising
  • Tenderness
  • Inability to bear weight on the foot
  • Visible deformity

Recovery from Foot and Ankle Injuries

The most common course of treatment for minor sprains is RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression bandage, Elevation). This usually works with minor ankle and foot injuries. For more severe injuries, your doctor may elect to outfit you with a cast to reset broken bones and allow for optimal healing. Some people are required to use canes, crutches and other mobility aids after a foot or ankle injury.

Recovery from foot injuries can take weeks, or even months in more severe cases. The costs for your treatment can be high due to the need for x-rays, medication and hospital stays. If foot surgery is required, the costs can easily skyrocket.
