AUGUSTA, Ga. – In a tragic incident on Sunday, a fatal car crash on Old Savannah Road in Augusta claimed the life of a local man. The Richmond County Coroner’s Office confirmed the death of 26-year-old Deveunte Zavien Calloway following the accident.
Calloway was operating his vehicle along Old Savannah Road near the intersection of 13th Avenue when he reportedly lost control. The vehicle veered off the road, striking a fence and guardrail before coming to rest in a nearby canal, where it was found partially submerged.
Emergency Medical Services had to extricate Calloway from the wreckage before he was rushed to a local hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead later that evening at 9:19 p.m.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, and officials have scheduled an autopsy to determine the exact circumstances surrounding Calloway’s death.
