In 2016, 171 people were killed in workplace incidents throughout Georgia. This number is down slightly from 180 individuals killed in work-related accidents in 2015, but is substantially higher than the 117 killed in 2013 or the 101 killed in 2012. Transportation-Related Injuries
The transportation industry is filled with opportunities for injury and death, including 76 fatal work injuries in Georgia in 2016, according to a report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This includes auto and truck accidents while the employee is on the job or in a company car on the way to or from work. Transportation-related injuries can also include injuries to bus drivers, train operators, and others who are responsible for transporting goods or services. Transportation injuries accounted for around 40 percent of the workplace injury deaths that took place in Georgia in 2016.
Violence in the Workplace
In 2016, violence in the workplace led to 37 fatalities in Georgia, according to the report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This includes attacks by both people and animals. Other employees, customers, and animals can all be potential causes of workplace attacks, meaning that employers and property owners hold a duty to maintain a safe premises for occupants. Liability for violence-related deaths in the workplace can often extend beyond the perpetrator, depending on the circumstances.
Trips, Slips, and Falls
The Bureau of Labor Statistics also notes that, in Georgia, trips, slips, and falls are the third most common cause of death in the workplace. These might include construction-related deaths, when workers fall from heights, as well as incidents that lead to tripping or falling into heavy equipment.
