If you are interested in reducing the likelihood of becoming pregnant, there are a number of birth control methods on the market today in which to choose from. One highly effective option is the Mirena IUD. It is 99% effective for preventing pregnancy and is also used to treat heavy menstruation.

However, if you use this device, you may not be aware of the potential for serious side effects and/or other complications. Further, if you were injured by this form of birth control, you may be entitled to financial compensation.

About the Mirena IUD

Now, the Mirena IUD is a hormone-releasing intrauterine device that is inserted into the uterus. The device is t-shaped and made out of plastic, and is effective in preventing pregnancy and treating heavy menstruation.

While not all IUDs releases hormones, the Mirena IUD does discharge small amounts of progestin into the uterus. The IUD is inserted by a trained healthcare provider and will stay in place for up to five years.

Complications Following Mirena Insertion

Due to its effectiveness, many women choose this form of birth control. However, there can be complications, which may be serious. The most common side effects that Mirena warns users about are:

  • Abdominal and pelvic pain
  • Migraines
  • Pelvic infections, and
  • Ovarian cysts – most are asymptomatic but can result in pelvic pain.

Bear in mind that in cases where pregnancy does occur, there is a risk of miscarriage or even infertility for patients that have used the Mirena IUD. In addition, there are more severe complications that can result, including:

  • Device migration – IUD moves out of place, requiring surgical removal
  • Organ perforation
  • Ectopic pregnancy – fertilized egg implants outside of the uterus; threatening the mother’s life
  • Neurological disorders, and
  • Depression, anxiety, and mood swings.

It’s important to seek medical help immediately if you have a Mirena IUD and experience any unusual side effects.

Mirena Crash Following Removal

Now, if any of these symptoms occur, you may decide to have the IUD removed. Removal may also be desired if you are interested in becoming pregnant or after the five-year life of the device has expired.

Note that the IUD must be taken out by a medical professional. You may experience some pain and cramping, as well as what is described as a “crash.”

This results from hormonal changes due to the body no longer receiving progestin. Minor effects can accompany the crash, including the following:

  • Weight gain
  • Breast tenderness
  • Fatigue
  • Mood swings
  • Acne
  • Diminished sex drive
  • Headaches, and
  • Nausea.

However, there are also more serious symptoms that you should be aware of including:

  • Severe mood swings
  • Depression/thoughts of suicide
  • Anxiety
  • Hair loss, and
  • Delayed fertility.

Keep in mind that removing the device can sometimes perforate the uterus. For that reason, it’s important to get medical attention right away if you have excessive bleeding, a fever, or lasting and severe pain in the uterus, pelvis, or abdomen.

Treatment for the Mirena Crash

In most cases, the symptoms associated with the Mirena crash will diminish on their own once your body reaches a hormonal balance. In the meantime, steps you can take to help lessen symptoms of the crash include using over-the-counter medications for pain and speaking with a therapist for about managing emotional issues.

As best you can try to stay active, eat healthily, and maintain good relationships. But, also know that, sometimes, the body does not recover properly from having an IUD removed and you may have lingering symptoms. If this occurs, consult a medical professional right away.

Personal Injury Lawsuit Following Mirena Crash

Now, if you have suffered serious complications from the use or removal of a Mirena IUD, you may be entitled to compensation. These cases can be complicated, and it can be difficult to determine who is responsible. In fact, liability may extend to the medical staff involved in the insertion or removal of the device, the manufacturer of the product, or the medical facility.

It’s also important to look at the extent to which you were warned about the dangers associated with using or removing the IUD. Physicians are required to consider your medical history in making these decisions, taking into account whether or not you may be more susceptible to complications and communicating the risks of these procedures to you.

For that reason, you will want a qualified personal injury attorney on your side that has experience with these types of lawsuits and will fully investigate your case and everyone involved.
